“Roll-a-Story: London Mystery” brings together imagination, history, and a hint of spooky fun! It’s a dice-based storytelling worksheet that lets students create their own short mysteries set around London’s most iconic spots.

The activity is simple, but full of learning opportunities — students practise sentence building, narrative writing, and creative thinking, while also discovering real-world places around the city.
🏙️ About the Locations
This worksheet is London-themed, so a few locations might be new to students — which actually makes it a great opportunity to start with a short warm-up chat or a visual introduction.
Here are a few notes you can share before playing:
The London Underground — the oldest underground train system in the world! Parts of it are closed off now, and during WWII many people used it as a shelter from bombings. There are even spooky stories about the abandoned tunnels…

The Natural History Museum — a grand, Hogwarts-like building filled with real dinosaur fossils and the world’s first animatronic T-Rex. It’s both beautiful and slightly eerie!

Buckingham Palace — the royal family’s home in the heart of London, surrounded by green parks and historic guards.

St. James’s Park — the picturesque park in front of the Palace, famous for its pelicans and royal swans. (Fun fact: the birds in the royal parks are technically protected by the Crown!)

Heathrow Airport — one of the busiest airports in Europe, with multiple terminals and three Underground stations connecting it to the city. A perfect place to start or end an adventure!

An Old London Pub — not a specific location, but a nod to the city’s lively social culture. British pubs are often called “the third place” — after home and work — where people relax, chat, and sometimes play bingo or board games together.

👻 Meet the London Creatures
Two special characters appear in this worksheet:
- Lord T-Rex — inspired by the museum’s famous dinosaur exhibit. Imagine him as a posh, dramatic nobleman who might still roar if provoked.
- The Were-Corgi — a nod to the Queen’s beloved dogs, but with a twist. A cute little corgi by day, a tiny howling werewolf by night!
You can let students include them freely, or use them as optional prompts for extra fun.

🎲 How to Play
- Students roll one six-sided die for each category: Location, Monster, Weapon, and Plot.
- Combine the results to create a unique London mystery story.
- Encourage students to compete for “Best Story of the Day” — or work in pairs to write short comics or mini-posters.
- For larger groups, roll together as a class. For smaller classes (under 10), let students roll individually to create completely unique tales.
- You can adapt the output: short written stories, illustrated panels, or even spoken storytelling challenges.
If students get stuck, guide them with these five starting questions:
- Who is in the story?
- Where is it happening?
- What time of day is it?
- What is happening right now?
- What happens next?
